  • Judy Mathieson
Lecture: Patchwork Dogs, and Sheep, and Occasionally Cats!

Judy Mathieson has been making quilts since 1973, while completing a BS degree in Home Economics (Textiles and Clothing) at Cal State Northridge. Beginning in 1983, she spent thirty wonderful years traveling to lecture and teach quilting workshops throughout the United States, in Canada, Japan, Australia, Scotland, New Zealand and England. She is also certified by the National Quilt Association as a judge. Her work has won numerous prizes at Houston Quilt Festival, PIQF, Quilt National, Visions, NQA, and many other shows.

Judy is known for her Mariner's Compass quilts, which are examples of exquisite craftsmanship. She also makes sweet and whimsical quilts about dogs, and there is a wonderful story behind them. After living in Los Angeles for 30 years, in 1996 Judy and her husband, Jack, moved to Sebastopol, near Santa Rosa. Jack's retirement hobby is training his three border collies for local sheepdog competition. So, there are always dogs, sheep and sometimes cats around, and they've been appearing in the quilts Judy makes for her own pleasure. This very special presentation explains the inspiration for these quilts and also includes a brief survey of her quilt career of over 35 years.

  • Sue Cavanaugh
Lecture: Cavanaugh on Cavanaugh: Reinventing Myself As an Artist

Sue Cavanaugh discovered art quilts in 1999, the year before early retirement from Ohio State University allowed her to try something new. Since 2002, she has been a full time studio artist. Sue learned to sew as a child, earned a B.S. in Home Economics Education, and had made several traditional quilts before discovering art quilts. She was confident about her knowledge of textiles and construction skills, but learning to dye and pattern fabric was a challenge. And transforming a passion for textiles into art? Using her quilts to tell the story, Sue will share her journey to becoming an artist.

Sue's work has been seen in national and international exhibits including Quilt National 2009 & 2011 and Visions 2010. She's appeared on Quilting Arts TV and has had work in The Art Quilt Collection, 1000 Artisan Textiles, Quilting Arts magazine and the Surface Design Newsletter. She received the Lynn Goodwin Borgman Award for Surface Design (QN '09), Best of Show at the 2008 Shibori Cut Loose exhibit at the Textile Center in Minneapolis and was commissioned by the Ohio Arts Council to create the 2006 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio. She is represented by Circle Galleries, Columbus, Ohio and grâficas gallery, Nantucket, Massachusetts.
